🔵 American Airlines Plane Crash

Good evening. It’s Wednesday, January 29.

An American Airlines passenger jet with 64 people on board has crashed midair into a military helicopter while attempting to land at Reagan National Airport in Washington.

Emergency services in the city are searching the nearby Potomac River after the jet plummeted into the water just before 9pm on Wednesday night.

Law enforcement sources say there are confirmed fatalities and no survivors have yet been rescued.

Senior Justice Department officials under President Trump have held discussions with federal prosecutors in Manhattan about the possibility of dropping their corruption case against Mayor Eric Adams of New York, according to NYT.

The officials have also spoken to Mr. Adams’s defense team since Mr. Trump took office, the people said. The defense team is led by Alex Spiro, who is also the personal lawyer for Elon Musk.

Mr. Adams was indicted in September on charges including bribery, fraud and soliciting illegal foreign campaign contributions after an investigation that began in 2021. He has pleaded not guilty, maintained his innocence and contended that he is being prosecuted because he criticized the Biden administration.

President Trump signed a memo on Wednesday to prepare a massive facility at Guantánamo Bay to be used to house deported migrants.

Trump had earlier teased he intended to do so during a signing ceremony for an immigration-related bill.

The memo will direct the Department of Defense and Department of Homeland Security to prepare a 30,000-person migrant facility at Guantánamo Bay, a facility in Cuba that has been used to house military prisoners, including several involved in the 9/11 attacks.

President Donald Trump on Wednesday reached an agreement with Meta to end a lawsuit against the company for suspending his social media accounts in 2021 after the Jan. 6 capitol riot, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing “people familiar with the agreement.”

Facebook and Instagram both suspended Trump’s accounts in the wake of the incident, as did many other social media platforms.

Trump ultimately created Truth Social, a Twitter-esque platform, to allow his unrestricted posting. Facebook and Instagram restored his accounts in mid-2024.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. appeared before the Senate Committee on Finance for his first confirmation hearing as President Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on Jan. 29.

Kennedy, who ran for president as a Democrat and then an independent before ending his White House bid and backing Trump in August 2024, entered the chamber to applause from supporters in the audience and shook hands with lawmakers before taking a seat.

The hearing showcased a sharp division between the parties over Kennedy’s views. Most Republicans praised Kennedy for his past advocacy work and his emphasis on addressing the nation’s chronic disease epidemic, while Democrats criticized the founder of the Children’s Health Defense for his stance on vaccine efficacy.

The Republican-controlled Senate on Wednesday confirmed Lee Zeldin to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, a key role to help President Donald Trump fulfill his pledge to roll back major environmental regulations.

The vote was 56-42 in Zeldin’s favor. Three Democrats — Sens. Ruben Gallego and Mark Kelly of Arizona and John Fetterman of Pennsylvania — supported Zeldin, along with all 53 Republicans.

Zeldin, a former Republican congressman from New York, is a longtime Trump ally and served on Trump’s defense team during his first impeachment.

Security agents escorted the inspector general of the U.S. Department of Agriculture out of her office on Monday after she refused to comply with her firing by the Trump administration, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.

Phyllis Fong, a 22-year veteran of the department, had earlier told colleagues that she intended to stay after the White House terminated her Friday, saying that she didn’t believe the administration had followed proper protocols, the sources said.

In an email to colleagues on Saturday, reviewed by Reuters, she said the independent Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency “has taken the position that these termination notices do not comply with the requirements set out in law and therefore are not effective at this time.”

Infowars radio host Alex Jones suggested he could be heading to Washington DC next week as the new Trump administration settles into power.

“I have been invited to come next week. Should I go to DC?” Jones posted to X Tuesday evening, replying to an X user who wrote, “Imagine if Alex Jones gets a White House Press Pass…”

Jones’ post sparked interest following White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt’s comments Tuesday that citizen and independent journalists would now be welcomed at press briefings.
