Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected as the first American pope in history, emerging as a surprise choice on the second day of the conclave, the secretive election held inside the Sistine Chapel.
The Chicago-born cardinal, widely regarded as a progressive in the mould of his predecessor Pope Francis, has taken the name Pope Leo XIV.
Despite receiving congratulations from Donald Trump, he may prove to be a thorn in the side of the US administration.


President Donald Trump is strongly considering installing Fox News host and former prosecutor Jeanine Pirro as interim U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, sources familiar with the matter told ABC News.
The potential selection comes as Trump told reporters in the Oval Office Thursday that Ed Martin, who is currently serving as D.C.ās interim top prosecutor, would not be taking the position permanently after losing support among top Republicans in the Senate.
An announcement about a new interim U.S. attorney could come as soon as Thursday, sources said. Sources caution that plans could always change and a decision is never final until publicly announced by the president.

The FBI and US Attorneyās Office in Albany have launched a criminal investigation into mortgage fraud claims against New York Attorney General Letitia James, a source familiar with the probe told The Post.
The investigation, first reported by the Albany Times Union, follows a request that the Justice Department investigate James, sent by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte to the Justice Department last month.
New Yorkās Northern District, where Pulteās referral was steered, is led by US Attorney John Sarcone III, an ally of President Trump.

A county judge, a former elections administrator and three other elected officials are among a half-dozen people indicted in an alleged āvote harvestingā scheme in a small south Texas county, state Attorney General Ken Paxton announced Wednesday.
āElected officials who think they can cheat to stay in power will be held accountable. No one is above the law,ā Paxton said in a statement.
According to Paxtonās office, Frio County Judge Rochelle Camacho faces three counts of vote harvesting; former county elections administrator Carlos Segura faces one count of evidence tampering; Pearsall City Council members Ramiro Trevino and Racheal Garza face one count each of vote harvesting; Pearsall Independent School District Trustee Adriann Ramirez faces three counts of vote harvesting; and campaign worker Rosa Rodriguez faces two counts of vote harvesting.
