šŸ”µ Cuomo is Back

Good morning. Itā€™s Saturday, March 1.

Andrew Cuomo, the former governor of New York and arguably one of the biggest names in state politics, has officially entered New York Cityā€™s race for mayor.

The move by the 56th governor of New York has been long-anticipated as many political insiders considered it only a matter of time before Cuomo threw his hat in the ring.

Cuomo made his candidacy official on Saturday, announcing his candidacy in a 17-minute video uploaded to his campaign website. In that video, Cuomo pitches his return as a way to pull the city from social and political turmoil, highlighting moderate positions on crime and his long history of political accomplishments.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered an additional 2,500 to 3,000 active-duty troops to the southern U.S. border, including soldiers from a motorized brigade equipped with 20-ton armored Stryker combat vehicles, defense officials familiar with the effort said.

The defense secretary approved the orders Friday, the officials said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal Defense Department planning. The soldiers are primarily from the 4th Infantry Divisionā€™s 2nd Stryker Brigade at Fort Carson, Colorado, and will be joined by soldiers specializing in engineering, intelligence and public affairs, the officials said.

The Pentagon announced the deployment, first reported by The Washington Post, in a statement Saturday afternoon. Hegseth has ordered the deployment of a Stryker brigade combat team and a helicopter unit to ā€œreinforce and expand current border security operations to seal the border and protect the territorial integrity of the United States,ā€ the statement said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky took to social media Saturday to clarify comments he made during the contentious back-and-forth with President Trump at the White House a day earlier, saying lasting peace in Eastern Europe would be ā€œdifficultā€ without U.S. support.

Zelensky, in a lengthy thread on the social platform X, expressed gratitude for the U.S. assistance to Kyiv during Russiaā€™s three-year invasion of his country, reiterated the two nationsā€™ ā€œstrategicā€ partnership and said no one wants peace more than Ukraine.

ā€œWeā€™ve been fighting for 3 years, and Ukrainian people need to know that America is on our side,ā€ Zelensky wrote, adding that Kyiv needs to be ā€œstrongā€ during peace agreement talks.

A federal judge extended the pause on President Donald Trumpā€˜s executive orders aimed at defunding transgender procedures for children and claimed that Trump had a ā€œdesire to harmā€ transgender youth in her decision.

The lawsuit brought forward by attorneys general from Colorado, Minnesota, Oregon, and Washington argues the orders violate the Fifth Amendmentā€™s equal protection clause and the Tenth Amendmentā€™s limitations on federal authority over state medical practices. U.S. District Court Judge Lauren King, a Biden appointee, granted the plaintiffs a preliminary injunction on most of the lawsuit after a temporary restraining order expired.

King ruled that the order declaring two genders ā€œdenies the very existence of transgender people and instead seeks to erase them from the federal vocabulary altogether and eliminate medical care for gender dysphoria at federally funded medical institutions.ā€

Florida first lady Casey DeSantis, the wife of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), hinted at a gubernatorial run in 2026.

Rep. Bryon Donalds (R-FL), whom President Donald Trump endorsed, already entered the race to be the Republican nominee in the stateā€™s 2026 gubernatorial election. When asked by reporters Friday if she would consider running, Casey DeSantis did not rule it out.

ā€œTo quote the late, great Yogi Berra, ā€˜When you come to a fork in the road, take it,ā€™ā€ she told reporters at a press conference in Miami before turning the stage over to her husband.

President Donald Trump announced Friday he will pardon baseball legend Pete Rose.

ā€œOver the next few weeks I will be signing a complete PARDON of Pete Rose, who shouldnā€™t have been gambling on baseball, but only bet on HIS TEAM WINNING. He never betted against himself, or the other team,ā€ Trump said on his Truth Social platform.

Trump also criticized Major League Baseball for barring the all-time hitter from the Baseball Hall of Fame over his gambling activities, despite the playerā€™s record.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is once again asking federal workers to explain what they have accomplished as President Donald Trump and Elon Musk work to root out waste.

This weekā€™s email reportedly came from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) with the subject line ā€œWhat did you do last week? Part II,ā€ referencing the previous DOGE email.

The Associated Press reports that this differed from how the email was expected to go out, as the new version was reportedly supposed to be from individual agencies, not OPM.

A senior military leader of the terrorist organization Hurras al-Din, an Al-Qaeda affiliate, was killed in a precision airstrike in Syria carried out by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces, according to a press release.

Muhammed Yusuf Ziya Talay was killed in an airstrike that CENTCOM says is part of its efforts to ā€œdisrupt and degradeā€ terroristsā€™ plans to harm civilians or military personnel from the U.S. and its allies.

ā€œAs we have said in the past, we will continue to pursue relentlessly these terrorists in order to defend our homeland, and U.S., allied, and partner personnel in the region,ā€ Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, commander, U.S. Central Command, said in a press release.
