Federal authorities in Detroit on Tuesday announced charges against a Chinese scholar at the University of Michigan and her boyfriend, a scientific researcher, for allegedly conspiring to smuggle a dangerous biological pathogen into the U.S.āa pathogen capable of damaging agricultural crops and causing illness in humans and livestock.
University of Michigan scholar Yunqing Jian, 33, and her boyfriend, Zunyong Liu, 34, both Chinese citizens, were charged in a criminal complaint with conspiracy, smuggling goods into the U.S., making false statements, and visa fraud, interim Detroit U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. announced.
According to the criminal complaint, Jian received Chinese government funding to work on the dangerous pathogen in China. A pathogen is a microorganism or biological agent that can cause disease or illness.


A federal judge on Tuesday issued a sweeping block of President Donald Trumpās order to stop taxpayer-funded transgender procedures for prisoners.
U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth of Washington, D.C., granted class-action status to a lawsuit brought by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). The ACLU filed the lawsuit on behalf of over 1,000 federal prison inmates who are taking advantage of taxpayer-funded prison systems to finance clothing, hormones, and other expenses.
āIn light of the plaintiffsā largely personal motives for undergoing gender-affirming care, neither the BOP nor the Executive Order provides any serious explanation as to why the treatment modalities covered by the Executive Order or implementing memoranda should be handled differently than any other mental health intervention,ā Lamberth wrote in a 36-page ruling.

Well that didnāt take long⦠hours after Elon Musk raged against the GOPās āBig Beautiful Billā, the White House sent Congress a request to claw back $9.4 billion in funding for foreign aid and public broadcasting ā the first move to codify cuts identified by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
According to White House budget director Russ Vought, the White House āchose the easiest DOGE cuts to start recissionsā which would cancel the $9.4 billion in previously appropriated funds.
The recissions include $1.1 billion in cuts for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which distribute funding to NPR and PBS, and $8.3 billion in cuts to USAID.

The presidentās comment was made days after he wrote that he may withhold federal funding if California doesnāt comply with an executive order he signed months ago, which bans transgender athletes from competing in womenās and girlsā sports. The order specifically directs federal agencies to cut off funding to states that refuse to enforce the ban, although some states have yet to comply.

South Korean Liberal opposition leader Lee Jae-myung has won the snap election and is the countryās new president.
His rival, conservative candidate Kim Moon-soo, conceded defeat and congratulated Lee for his victory.
Lee has 48.4% of the vote vs. 42.6% for Kim, with 90% of the votes counted.
