The Internal Revenue Service is drawing up plans to slash its 90,000-person workforce in half, according to a report.
The tax-collecting agency aims to achieve the massive reduction in its workforce through layoffs, attrition and buyout offers, sources told the Associated Press on Tuesday.
The Trump administration also plans to reallocate some IRS employees to the Department of Homeland Security, where they will assist with immigration enforcement – a request DHS Secretary Kristi Noem made to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent last month.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) announced Tuesday that the Inter-American Foundation has removed all but one employee from its payroll in order to comply with President Trump’s executive order on reducing federal bureaucracy.
The headcount at the independent federal agency prior to the downsizing was 48 and the average employee salary was $131,000 per year, according to the Elon Musk-headed DOGE.
“The Inter-American Foundation, an agency whose primary action was to issue foreign grants ($60M budget), has been reduced to its statutory minimum (1 active employee),” DOGE tweeted.
President Donald Trump revealed that the top terrorist suspect behind the 2021 Abbey Gate attack in Afghanistan that killed 13 U.S. service members has been apprehended.
“Tonight, I am pleased to announce that we have just apprehended the top terrorist responsible for that atrocity,” Trump revealed during his speech before a joint Congress. “And he is right now on his way here to face the swift sword of American justice.”
The suspect was identified as Muhammed Sharifullah, Fox News confirmed.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced Tuesday that his office has launched a criminal investigation into Andrew and Tristan Tate, who face human trafficking charges in Romania, just days after their return to the U.S.
Uthmeier stated on social media that he has directed his office to collaborate with law enforcement on a preliminary inquiry into the Tate brothers.
“After a thorough review of the evidence, I’ve instructed the Office of Statewide Prosecution to execute search warrants and issue subpoenas in the now-active criminal investigation into the Tate brothers,” Uthmeier said.
CK Hutchison Holdings Ltd., the Hong Kong-based conglomerate, agreed to sell control of a unit that operates ports near the Panama Canal after pressure from US President Donald Trump to limit Chinese interests in the region.
A consortium including BlackRock Inc., Global Infrastructure Partners, and Terminal Investment Ltd. reached a deal in principle to acquire units that hold 80% of the Hutchison Ports group, which operates 43 ports in 23 countries.
The consortium will also acquire 90% of Panama Ports Co., which operates the two ports in Balboa and Cristobal.
The bodies of nine students who went missing on vacation in southern Mexico last month have been found dismembered by the side of a local highway — with a bag of hands nearby.
The group’s gruesome remains were discovered in the trunk of an abandoned vehicle and underneath a blood-covered tarp in San Jose Miahuatlan on the border of the Mexican states of Puebla and Oaxaca.
Four of the bodies were in the trunk, while the other five corpses were left under the tarp.
