🔵 Judge Defies SCOTUS

Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 10.

A New Hampshire federal judge issued a temporary nationwide block on President Trump’s executive order to end birthright citizenship, two weeks after the Supreme Court quashed a universal injunction in the case.

Concord US District Judge Joseph Laplante also certified a nationwide class for “those deprived of citizenship,” using an authority that the Supreme Court left untouched after its landmark decision June 27.

“The preliminary injunction is just not a close call to the court,” Laplante, a George W. Bush appointee, stated during a hearing. “The deprivation of US citizenship and an abrupt change of policy that was longstanding … that’s irreparable harm.”

The Justice Department has issued nearly 20 subpoenas to doctors and clinics involved in performing transgender medical procedures on children, a DOJ official announced on Wednesday.

The Justice Department’s Chad Mizelle made the announcement during the Federal Trade Commission’s workshop on the “Dangers of ‘Gender Affirming-Care’ For Minors” in Washington, D.C. Mizelle shared that DOJ has issued nearly 20 subpoenas against clinics who are engaged in transgender transition attempts, noting that the DOJ’s investigations include healthcare fraud, false statements, and more.

Mizelle urged Americans to come forward if they could provide information about deceptive practices in the transgender medicine industry, saying Wednesday: “If you are someone who has been harmed please come forward and let us know.”

Former CIA Director John Brennan said on MSNBC Wednesday that he has no idea why federal authorities are investigating him.

Brennan and former FBI Director James Comey are under criminal investigation for potential wrongdoing related to the Steele dossier, which guided the FBI’s 2016 probe into alleged collusion between President Donald Trump’s campaign and Russia. During an appearance on “Deadline: White House,” Brennan claimed he has had no contact with investigators despite the ongoing probes.

“If there is an investigation then people will be questioned. I would be questioned about it. But, again, I’ve had no contact from them. But, again, I testified in front of many, many congressional committees in the House and the Senate over the years,” Brennan said.

The Trump administration has resumed sending some weapons to Ukraine, a week after the Pentagon had directed that some deliveries be paused.

The weapons now moving into Ukraine include 155 mm munitions and precision-guided rockets known as GMLRS, two U.S. officials told The Associated Press on Wednesday. They spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details that had not been announced publicly.

It’s unclear exactly when the weapons started moving.

The Defense Department will become the largest shareholder in rare earth miner MP Materials after agreeing to buy $400 million of its preferred stock, the company said Thursday.

MP Materials owns the only operational rare earth mine in the U.S. at Mountain Pass, California, about 60 miles outside Las Vegas. Proceeds from the Pentagon investment will be used to expand MP’s rare earths processing capacity and magnet production, the company said.

Shares of MP Materials were last up about 50% on the news.

The Trump administration on Thursday issued sweeping new rules barring illegal immigrants from a host of federal welfare benefits, including food stamps, Title X family planning funds, homelessness assistance, and substance abuse treatment funds.

Several Cabinet departments, including the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services, were involved in drafting the regulation, which reinterprets the 1996 welfare reform legislation, the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act. The new regulation rescinds a 1998 interpretation of the phrase “federal public benefit” that allowed illegal immigrants to take part in public health assistance programs.

“For too long, the government has diverted hardworking Americans’ tax dollars to incentivize illegal immigration,” HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said in a statement Thursday. “Today’s action changes that—it restores integrity to federal social programs, enforces the rule of law, and protects vital resources for the American people.”

T-Mobile announced it is scrapping its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs in a move the company says is both for legal reasons and for internal restructuring. It comes as the major cell carrier seeks federal approval for two business deals.

In a letter sent to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Commissioner Brendan Carr and made public on Wednesday, the company said it is ending DEI-related policies “not just in name, but in substance,” says Reuters.

As part of the shift, employees previously assigned to DEI-specific roles will be reassigned within the Human Resources department to focus more broadly on employee culture and engagement. T-Mobile stated that it will no longer maintain any positions or teams focused solely on DEI initiatives.

As summer kicks off, tech and media moguls around the world are preparing for a season of travel—but a select few are also getting ready to descend on the mountain resort town of Sun Valley, Idaho. Since the early 1980s, the annual Allen & Company conference—nicknamed “summer camp for billionaires“—has been held there, drawing the industry’s most powerful figures.

Despite its laid-back dress code and outdoor activities like hiking and biking, the gathering is anything but casual. Hosted by the investment bank Allen & Company, the invite-only event typically begins in the second week of July. It features high-level meetings and private lectures, all behind closed doors and largely off-limits to the press. It’s also a major hub for dealmaking, with past conferences setting the stage for transformative moves like Jeff Bezos’ purchase of The Washington Post and Disney’s merger with ABC.

This year’s guest list, reported by Variety and Puck, is packed with Silicon Valley power players. Mark Zuckerberg, Tim Cook, Sundar Pichai, Satya Nadella, Andy Jassy and Sam Altman are all expected to attend.
