🔵 RESULTS: Special Election
Good evening. It’s Tuesday, April 1.

This Tuesday night, voters will head to the polls for special elections in two states. In Florida, there are two special election House races, Florida’s 1st Congressional District and 6th Congressional District, with former Republican Reps. Matt Gaetz and Mike Waltz having resigned. Florida’s 6th is first to close at 7 pm ET, while the 1st will follow at 8 pm ET.
There’s also the state Supreme Court race in Wisconsin, which could have national implications, especially if Democrat-backed candidate Susan Crawford wins. There’s also a ballot question regarding voter ID. The polls will close there at 9 pm ET.
Waltz currently serves as President Donald Trump’s National Security Advisor and resigned his House seat on January 20 to be part of the administration. His seat was once held by now-Gov. Ron DeSantis, who left the House in September 2018 to focus on running for his current position.

Multiple pedestrians have been injured after a box truck struck them on Tuesday afternoon, according to Boston police, with BPD Commissioner Michael Cox calling it “more of a tragic accident than anything else.”
The truck, a yellow-colored Penske rental truck, struck multiple poles and flipped on its side before becoming wedged between a pole and a building, authorities said.
Firefighters used extrication tools to remove the trapped driver from the cab of the truck, a police spokesperson said. He is now in stable condition.

White House aides have drafted a proposal that would levy tariffs of roughly 20% on most imports, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.
The report cited three people familiar with the matter. It also said White House advisors cautioned that several options are still on the table, meaning the 20% tariffs may not come to pass. Another plan being considered is the country-by-country “reciprocal” approach, according to the Post.
The report comes a day before April 2, when President Donald Trump is set to announce his larger plans for global trade.

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) on Tuesday set a new record for the longest floor speech in Senate history, having held the floor for 25 hours and 5 minutes to decry potential GOP spending cuts in their looming tax bill and policies put in place by the Trump administration.
Booker, the No. 4 member of Democratic leadership, wrapped up at 8:05 p.m. Tuesday, having started at 7 p.m. the previous day — topping the previous record of 24 hours and 18 minutes held by former Sen. Strom Thurmond (S.C.).
As he neared that mark, Booker noted that there’s a room on the Senate side of the Capitol named after Thurmond, who set the original record filibustering against the Civil Rights Act of 1957.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) and two top U.S. lawmakers on March 31 sued President Donald Trump over a recent executive order that aims to enforce the law against illegal immigrant voting and election dates.
“The Executive Order seeks to impose radical changes on how Americans register to vote, cast a ballot, and participate in our democracy—all of which threaten to disenfranchise lawful voters and none of which is legal,” says the lawsuit, filed by Democratic Party attorney Marc Elias in federal court in Washington.
Trump’s March 25 order has multiple sections. Several deal with laws that bar foreigners from registering to vote or from voting in federal elections. Trump directed the independent Election Assistance Commission to require proof of U.S. citizenship in its mail voter registration form, ordered U.S. officials to work with the Department of Government Efficiency to review voter rolls to identify noncitizens who are already registered, and told the U.S. attorney general to prosecute individuals who have illegally registered or voted.

The Defense Department on Monday revealed that it would be imposing “sex-neutral” standards for military combat roles.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced the changes to its physical fitness requirements in an effort to “fix” the standards that he said were “lowered” under President Barack Obama’s administration.
“Different physical standards for men and women in the U.S. military have existed for a long time. BUT, there were also combat roles that were male-only,” Hegseth said in a statement on X. “Then, under Obama, all combat roles were opened to men AND women. BUT, different physical fitness standards for men and women remained.”

Attorney General Pamela Bondi on Tuesday directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, the man accused of gunning down UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City last year.
Mangione, 26, was federally charged in December with stalking and murdering Thompson after the CEO was fatally shot on the streets of midtown Manhattan. He was also charged with first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism by state prosecutors.
Mangione has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
