President Donald Trump’s “one big, beautiful bill” passed the House of Representatives early on Thursday morning with few Republican defections.

It is a significant victory for House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., who navigated deep inter-party friction within the House GOP Conference to deliver a product from which few Republican lawmakers ultimately defected.

The bill is a sweeping multi-trillion-dollar piece of legislation that advances Trump’s agenda on taxes, immigration, energy, defense and the national debt. It’s sought to make a dent in the federal government’s spending trajectory by cutting roughly $1.5 trillion in government spending elsewhere. The U.S. government is over $36 trillion in debt and has spent $1.05 trillion more than it’s collected in the 2025 fiscal year, according to the Treasury Department.

2. What We Know About ‘Free Palestine’ Killer Elias Rodriguez

The man who killed two Israeli embassy staff members outside the Capitol Jewish Museum in Washington, DC, on Wednesday night has been an active member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), a far-left, Marxist, pro-Palestine group.

Chicago native Elias Rodriguez, 30, held a red keffiyeh and shouted, “Free, free Palestine,” as he was being taken into custody after shooting Sarah Lynn Milgrim and her fiancé, Yaron Lischinsky.

According to a witness report, Rodriguez came into the museum looking visibly shaken.

3. What We Know About the Israeli Embassy Employees Killed in DC

Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Lynn Milgrim were identified Thursday as the two people killed in a shooting Wednesday night outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C.

The suspect, who authorities believe acted alone, was arrested by a museum security guard after he entered the building following the shooting. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino called the shooting an “act of targeted violence” in a post to X.

The Metropolitan Police Department identified the suspect as Elias Rodriguez, 30, of Chicago.

4. Woman Shot at CIA Headquarters After Gate Crashing

A woman was shot and wounded at CIA headquarters after crashing into a gate there early Thursday morning, NBC News reported.

The woman has been preliminarily identified as 27-year-old Monia Spadaro, two senior law enforcement officials briefed on the incident told NBC.

The officials are investigating whether Spadaro was intoxicated during the incident on CIA property in Langley, Virginia. She is being treated for the gunshot wounds, the officials said, NBC reported.

A plane has crashed in a residential area in California.

Pictures shared on social media show a huge fire in the middle of a residential street.

The crash happened shortly before 4am local time (11am GMT) in the Murphy Canyon neighbourhood of San Diego.

6. Trump Blocks Harvard’s Ability to Enrol International Students

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has revoked certification of Harvard’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem announced on social media platform X on Thursday.

The decision prohibits Harvard from enrolling international students.

“This administration is holding Harvard accountable for fostering violence, antisemitism, and coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party on its campus,” Noem wrote.

7. SCOTUS Blocks Creation of 1st Religious Public School

A divided Supreme Court on Thursday blocked the creation of the nation’s first religious charter school, a major loss for those advocating a greater role for religion in public life.

The court split 4-4 over whether to allow St. Isidore of Seville Virtual Charter School, keeping in place the Oklahoma Supreme Court’s decision that a religious charter school would violate the Constitution’s clause aimed at keeping religion separate from government.

Justice Amy Coney Barrett did not participate in the decision, leaving the nine-member court evenly divided. Although she didn’t give a reason, Barrett is close friends with the Notre Dame Law School professor who was an early legal adviser to the Catholic Church in Oklahoma, which wanted to open St. Isidore.
