🔵 Trump’s Economy Booms

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 30.

The U.S. economy grew at a much stronger-than-expected pace in the second quarter, powered by a turnaround in the trade balance and renewed consumer strength, the Commerce Department reported Wednesday.

Gross domestic product, a sum of goods and services activity across the sprawling U.S. economy, jumped 3% for the April through June period, according to figures adjusted for seasonality and inflation.

That topped the Dow Jones estimate for 2.3% and helped reverse a decline of 0.5% for the first quarter that came largely due to a huge drop in imports, which subtract from the total, as well as weak consumer spending amid tariff concerns.

The U.S., Japan, China and Philippines are bracing for tsunamis after 8.8 magnitude earthquake – one of the strongest ever recorded – struck in the Pacific Ocean off Russia’s far east coast.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Tsunami Warning Center (TWC) maps showed Hawaii and a portion of Northern California were under a rare tsunami warning—the highest level of alert— earlier today and on Tuesday evening. In Hawaii, this has now been downgraded to an advisory warning. A previous warning for parts of Alaska’s Aleutian Islands was also downgraded to the same level earlier.

“Tsunami advisories mean that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near the water is expected or is already occurring,” the National Weather Serice explains. “Areas in the advisory should not expect widespread inundation. Tsunamis are a series of waves dangerous many hours after initial arrival time. The first wave may not be the largest.”

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that India will pay a tariff of 25% beginning Aug. 1, in addition to a “penalty” for what he views as unfair trade policies and for India’s purchase of military equipment and energy from Russia.

The 25% tariff rate is modestly lower than what he imposed on India on “liberation day,” when he announced a 26% rate on the key trading partner.

But it’s still on the higher end of what Trump appeared to be considering for India. Trump on Tuesday said he was considering a rate between 20% and 25%.

The scandal-scarred independents running for New York City mayor stand little chance against front-runner Zohran Mamdani — even if the rivals team up against the socialist candidate, a shocking new poll found.

Mamdani, a Queens assemblyman and the Democratic nominee, is projected to handily win the November general election with 50% of likely voters in the latest survey, released Tuesday by Zenith Research/Public Progress Solutions.

Ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has decided to continue his comeback tour after his embarrassing June primary loss to 33-year-old Mamdani, came in a distant second at 22%, while GOP nominee Curtis Sliwa pulled 13%.

Lawmakers have denied Ghislaine Maxwell’s request for congressional immunity in exchange for her testimony, the Daily Mail has reported.

Maxwell, the longtime partner of deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, is currently serving a 20-year-sentence for sex trafficking and has been in talks with the Trump administration and Congress about dishing on the disgraced financier and his relationships.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer announced last week that Maxwell is set to testify before the panel on August 11 at the Tallahassee facility where she is serving her prison sentence.

The Senate on July 29 in a party-line vote confirmed Susan Monarez as director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Fifty-one Republicans voted to confirm Monarez, while 47 Democrats or nominal independents who caucus with the Democrats voted in opposition. Two GOP senators missed the vote.

The CDC is part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which is headed by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
