Good morning. It’s Friday, March 7.

Donald Trump has threatened Vladimir Putin with new sanctions if Russia does not stop “pounding” Ukraine.

Mr Trump said he was “strongly considering” large-scale sanctions and tariffs on Russia “until a ceasefire and final settlement agreement on peace is reached”.

His warning marked the first time he has challenged Mr Putin directly since becoming president, following a week of high tension between the White House and Ukraine.

Work is under way to make all men in Poland undergo military training, Prime Minister Donald Tusk said.

In a speech to the Polish parliament, Tusk said the government aimed to give full details in the coming months.

Efforts are being made to “prepare large-scale military training for every adult male in Poland,” he told the Sejm.

President Trump said he sent a letter on Wednesday to Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei and stressed that he wants to reach a deal on the country’s nuclear program.

Trump’s letter to Khamenei, which the president revealed in an interview with Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo that will air in full on Sunday, is the first significant engagement between the U.S. and Iran since the new administration took office.

Iran’s mission to the UN said no letter from Trump had been received.

Two active-duty US Army soldiers and one former soldier were arrested in Oregon on Thursday and were accused of gathering and sending sensitive information to individuals in China.

The arrests were confirmed by the Department of Justice and the FBI’s new Director, Kash Patel. The accused in the case were identified as Jian Zhao and Li Tian, who were stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, and former soldier Ruoyo Duan.

All three officers were charged with conspiring to commit bribery and theft of government property. Meanwhile. Zhao is facing additional charges of conspiring to obtain and transmit national defence information to an individual not authorized to receive it.

A federal antisemitism task force — convened by President Trump and including the Departments of Justice, Health and Human Services (HHS), and Education as well as the General Services Administration (GSA) — announced the barring of US taxpayers’ money from funding the school.

“Since October 7, Jewish students have faced relentless violence, intimidation, and anti-Semitic harassment on their campuses — only to be ignored by those who are supposed to protect them,” Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said in a statement.

Donald Trump shared stunning new details about the ongoing FBI reports into his two assassination attempts while yucking it up with reporters in the Oval Office Thursday afternoon.

Speaking from behind the Resolute Desk, the Republican president fielded a question about the status of the probes into both of his 2024 assassination attempts, in Butler on July 13 and in West Palm Beach on September 15.

Both are still under investigation and much remains unknown about the suspects Thomas Matthew Crooks, who was killed during the Butler shooting, and Ryan Routh, who is in federal custody.

President Donald Trump will sign an executive order directing the Education and Treasury Departments to make sure those who are in organizations supporting what he calls “illegal” activities can’t benefit from the Public Service Student Loan Forgiveness program, a White House aide said.

As part of the program, those working for the government or a non-profit organization have their loans forgiven after making the “equivalent of 120 qualifying monthly payments.”

The executive order, the aide said, will make sure “recipients who are engaged” in these sorts of activities can’t benefit from a program “that’s really not intended to support those sorts of things.”

As the Trump administration and Elon Musk’s Department of Government of Efficiency (DOGE) target expansive federal programs to eliminate waste, fraud and abuse, the Health and Human Services Department Inspector General identified a significant fraud scheme to divert funds from Medicare and Medicaid programs.

The inspector general says individuals impersonating hospital providers targeted contractors and state agencies administering federal programs by submitting false “electronic funds transfer authorization requests,” resulting in the diversion of nearly $27 million from the programs.

Last month, according to The Wall Street Journal, DOGE employees were working on site at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, combing through payment and contracting systems with a focus on identifying waste and fraud. Elon Musk, who is leading the effort to streamline the federal bureaucracy and reduce bloated programs, as a special White House employee, said that he suspects his team will identify significant fraud in the federal healthcare programs.
