The Trump administration is at the center of an extraordinary national security lapse in which a journalist was added to an encrypted group chat of senior U.S. officials, unbeknownst to them, that included a debate on whether the United States should attack the Houthis.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, national security adviser Mike Waltz, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard were part of a Signal chat that discussed the president’s options regarding the Yemeni-based Houthis.

Jeffrey Goldberg, the editor-in-chief of the Atlantic, was also added to the chat, the outlet reported. Goldberg writes in the article that he was unsure of the veracity of the group chat, speculating that it might have been disinformation or a simulation, but says he was essentially tipped off to strikes in Yemen two hours before the operation took place.

2. DHS Sec. Noem Moves to ‘Eliminate’ FEMA

US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem told a Cabinet meeting Monday that the department would move to “eliminate” the government’s disaster relief agency, days after President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing state and local governments to “play a more active and significant role” in responding to catastrophes.

Noem, whose department oversees the Federal Emergency Management Agency, has previously vowed to “get rid of FEMA the way it exists today;” Trump has said he would close the agency entirely, but that would require an act of Congress.

The agency has long enjoyed bipartisan support, however: “FEMA can’t go away,” Louisiana Republican Sen. John Kennedy told reporters in January, citing its primary role in “protect[ing] people and property.”

3. MAGA Influencers Paid to Oppose RFK Jr. Initiative to Remove Soda from SNAP Benefits

Multiple high-profile influencers associated with Make America Great Again (MAGA) have been accused of taking payments to oppose the Health and Human Services (HHS) initiative to remove soda from food stamps.

This debacle started Saturday when a thread on X from Nick Sortor appeared to show several influencers were accepting compensation for posts made pushing back against the federal government going after soda products being offered through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

“Over the past 48 hours, several large supposedly MAGA-aligned ‘influencers’ posted almost identical talking points fed to them, convincing you MAHA was out of line for not wanting soda purchases with food stamps (SNAP),” Sortor writes.

4. Georgia Prepares to Cancel 455,000 Voter Registrations

Georgia is planning to eliminate approximately half a million voters from its registration rolls in one of the largest registration removals in U.S. history.

Around 455,000 inactive voter registrations will be removed from the state’s registration list this summer, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. More than half of the registrations that are set to be canceled were identified by the Electronic Registration Information Center, which involves 24 states that identify when a voter moves out of state and is no longer eligible to vote, in this case, in Georgia.

“We want to do everything we can within the law to have the cleanest voter list possible,” State Elections Director Blake Evans said.

5. Trump Taps Alina Habba for Top Role at DOJ

President Donald Trump announced Monday that he has installed his personal lawyer, Alina Habba, to serve as interim U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey – the latest in a long list of former attorneys for Trump whom he has tapped for senior roles at the Department of Justice.

Trump said on Truth Social Monday that he has tapped Habba, his current White House counsel, to replace outgoing acting U.S. attorney, John Giordano, whom he said would be serving as the U.S. ambassador to Namibia.

Both promotions were announced by Trump Monday on social media.

6. Hamas Commander Killed in Gaza Hospital Strike

Amid its ongoing air and ground campaign in Gaza, renewed after the collapse of the ceasefire with Hamas earlier this month, Israel has conducted a string of assassinations of Hamas top leadership.

Hamas commander Ismail Barhoum was widely dubbed the ‘Prime Minister of Gaza’ and was killed Sunday night amid expanded airstrikes across the Strip. Israel’s military (IDF) said a ‘precision strike’ took him out at Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis.

An Israeli statement called him “key Hamas terrorist” – and the Palestinian group has since confirmed his death.

7. FDA Approved Lab-Grown Blood Vessel Despite Warnings

When the biotech company Humacyte designed a study to see if its lab-grown blood vessel worked, it decided to measure whether blood was flowing freely through the high-tech tube 30 days after it was implanted in a person.

As those days passed, some of the 54 patients in the study ran into trouble. Doctors lost track of one. Four died. Four more had a limb amputated, including one who developed a clot and infection in the artificial vessel, Food and Drug Administration records show.

Humacyte, which is traded on the Nasdaq, counted all those patients as proof of success in talks with investors and in an article in JAMA Surgery.
